| The concept of linguistic landscape was first introduced by Landry and Bourhis in 1997.The past decade has witnessed the flourishment of domestic research on this topic, most of which focused on the problems in translation but not the communicative purpose and symbolic significance. To enrich the research content of linguistic landscape,a field investigation was conducted in scenic spots, distinctive communities of the four inner districts of Dalian and Lvshunkou District.Based on the analysis of multilingualism and the English translation, the de facto situation was discussed and improvements were suggested for standardization of the linguistic landscape of Dalian. It is found that the most widely-used languages in Dalian are Chinese,English,Russian,Japanese and Korean, among which Chinese is the dominant language in most multilingual signs while other languages such as English also occupy a dominant position in some cases. It is also found that multilingualism varies from region to region and there exist many problems in English. It is vital that the government, relevant institutions and all communities work together to facilitate the standardization of linguistic landscape so as to improve the city identity and accelerate the internationalization of Dalian. |
