This report is a Chinese-English translation practice on SDL-H Semiconductor Laser Hair Removal Machine Manual.This practice is a translation project completed by the translator in Beijing Sincoheren Technology Development Co.Ltd.This project aims to provide an easy-to-understand and operable English translation for the users of this machine.The practice includes the translation of the machine’s function introduction,technical principle,operation method,precautions,etc.This translation practice is carried out under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s text typology theory.Different text types have different language functions,which also have different language features and author intentions.This manual is mainly a vocative text,which has both vocative function and informative function.For different types of text,the translator focused on communicative translation,supplemented by semantic translation,and adopted different translation methods and techniques,including part-of-speech conversion,literal translation with notes,voice conversion,inversion,etc.In addition,the author listed a large number of translation cases from three levels: communicative translation,semantic translation,the combination of communicative translation and semantic translation to analyze the text types and translation methods adopted in translation.Finally,it is concluded that the text typology theory is applicable to the translation of instruction manuals,and translators need to flexibly choose translation methods and techniques according to semantic translation or communicative translation,or a combination of both,so as to achieve a high-quality translation.
