This report is based on the translation of A sociology of Public Response to Hospital Changes and Closure. The source text,an academic text, explores how hospitals play significant roles within their communities and how the public respond to the hospital changes and closure through an in-depth qualitative case study of interviews with 44 Scottish people.Long and complex sentences, terminologies and culture-loaded words in the text cause much difficulty in reading and understanding. The report focuses on the equivalence of long-to-long sentence translation in academic texts.Due to differences between English and Chinese languages, long sentences are often divided into several sentences to align with Chinese expression during the translation process. However,it probably will be hard to achieve equivalence in style, form, information and meaning by blindly splitting and dividing sentences in an academic text. Therefore, this report will explore how to achieve equivalence between the source text and target text by retaining the complex parts in the long sentences. The author will,by analyzing specific cases, expound the necessity of long-to-long sentence translation in the academic text from aspects of stylistic, formal and meaning equivalence.Through this translation report, the author hopes that it will provide some reference to the translation of long sentences in academic texts in the future.
