A Report On The E-C Translation Of Better Business (Excerpt) Based On Functional Recontextualization Theory

The current translation material is taken from Better Business by Michael Solomon,Mary Poatsy and Kendall Martin.With the purpose of cultivating students’ interests in Business,the authors make use of a large amount of pictures,adopt question-and-answer(O&A)format and combine theory with examples.Better Business has typical commercial feature,but the language is concise and easy to understand.In this report,the author proposes the recontextualization process for the translation of commercial academic texts under the consideration of situational context and cultural context,analyzes typical cases encountered in the translation process,and makes a reflection on the translation work.This report is comprised of five parts: The first part is task description,dealing with the characteristics of the source text,significance and the overall structure of the report.The second part summarizes three phases of translation: pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation.The third part introduces the theory of functional recontextualization and puts forward the recontextualization process for the translation of business academic texts.The fourth part mainly presents and analyzes typical cases based on methods of amplification,omission,conversion,concretization and transposition.In the final part,the author summarizes and makes a reflection on the translation work.The author holds that translation process is also a process of recontextualization,in which the consideration of situational context and cultural context is indispensable,thus the report puts forward the following process: Understand and internalize source text(in source language context)—> Decode—> Restructure(in target language context),and it attempts to provide a reference for future research on commercial texts translation and relevant theories.
