Abstract/Summary:
American postmodern novelist Richard Powers’ Gain juxtaposes the stories of the tortuous history of Clare Company and Laura’s tragic life, thematically revealing that the chemical production has brought great threat to environment and human health, and thus arousing people’s attention to ecological protection. The ambiguities affecting the understanding of the ST and the expression of the TT exist in Gain, which has brought great obstacles to the translator.Context theory can be applied to solve the problem of ambiguity and help the translator reproduce the ST as accurately and authentically as possible.Based on the E-C translation of Gain, this report is to explore the application of context theory in translation from three aspects: linguistic context, situational context and cultural context.A number of given examples will demonstrate the important role such translation strategies as “explicitation”,“generalization”,“diction”,“equivalence of tone”,“Chinese four-character phrase”,“rewriting” and “annotation” play in determining the exact meanings of the ST and finding out the most appropriate expressions in the TT.The report can provide reference for the translation of other similar texts in terms of guiding theory and translation strategies.
