International Ecological Discourse Analysis Of China-related Wildlife Reports In Mainstream Newspaper Of Britain And The United States

As an important part of the ecological environment,wild animals have always been concerned about their survival problem,which is typical presented in news research.However,current research on wild animals is mainly focus on legal treaties,and there is less research on how discourse affects the relationship between people,nations and ecology.This research systematically studies the international ecological discourse analysis of China-related wildlife news reports in mainstream newspapers of Britain and The United States,aiming to reveal the ecological concepts in news report.This research extracts China-related wildlife news reports on the The Guardian and The New York Times in the past five years from the “Nexis global news corpus”.By deleting unrelated information,the number of characters in The Guardian is 1,4127,and the number of sentences is 533.the number of characters in The New York Times is 18,886,and the number of sentences is 772.Then,this research builds a corpus of “China-related wildlife news” and uses UAM Corpus Tool to label the characters and sentences.Based on the corpus of“China-related wildlife news”,this essay attempts to answer the following questions from the aspects of lexical and context:(1)In the “China-related wildlife news” corpus,what are the distribution features of the appraisal system?(2)What are the characteristics and meaning potential of the International Ecological Discourse appraisal of Chinese-related wildlife reports in mainstream newspaper of Britain and The United States?These are findings of this study.First,the distribution feature of resources of appraisal system in “China-related wildlife news” corpus is uneven.The attitude system accounts for the highest proportion of 44.35% in The Guardian,and characters that directly express attitudes appear most frequently,such as “skilled,“genius”,“celebrated”,“usefulness”,“worthiness”.The engagement system accounts for the highest proportion of 35.82% in The New York Times,and negative characters appear more frequently,such as “no”,“not”,“never”.China-related wildlife news in corpus conveys the ecological concept of respecting and protecting wild animals through the interaction of various resources in the attitude,engagement and graduation system.Second,International ecological discourses in mainstream newspapers of Britain and The United States are mainly explicit and positive evaluations,which aim to promote the construction of a good ecological relationship between people and nature in the international community,convey the ecological concept to people in various countries to love and respect wild animals.The Guardian actively publicizes China’s achievements in wildlife protection and maintain international ecological harmony by conveying the positive evaluation of ecologically beneficial discourses.The New York Times emphasizes that some of China’s measures have damaged international ecological relations and integrates foreign affairs and other issues into news reports,so as to convey ecologically destructive discourse and influence China’s international ecological image.Third,this research can help readers better understanding the inner meaning and true intention of news reports and improve their evaluative reading awareness,reasonably absorb international information,and correctly view the guidance and propaganda of news discourse.The international ecological discourse affects the ecological concept of the international society.This study refers to the appraisal system analysis framework of international ecological discourse,and aims to reveal the distribution features of resources in corpus and then explore meaning potential of appraisal system.In summary,the mainstream newspapers of Britain and The United States spread the importance of protecting wild animals,construct the ecological awareness of respecting for wild animals through ecological discourse,and guide readers to put it into practice to protect wild animals.
