A Study Of The Image Of Women In Chinese Women’s Films In The New Century

Some women’s films have attracted much attention in recent years,and the discussion of the portrayal of women in them has been heated,but only a few papers have been written on the study of the portrayal of women in women’s films.Therefore,this paper examines the image of women in Chinese women’s film since the new century from a feminist perspective,using both textual and case study methods.The focus is on what kind of woman’s images are presented in the representative women’s films of the new century,and how they are portrayed through the strategies and methods of construction.The thesis begins with the history of the development of Chinese women’s film,which is divided into four stages: the budding stage,the silent stage,the resurgence stage and the period of flourishing development after the new century.The main reasons for the flourishing of women’s film in the new century are the advent of the "her century" and the collective awakening of women’s consciousness.Then,according to the author’s definition of women’s film,the four main characteristics of women’s film in the new century are: struggle and resistance,anti-tradition,awakening of women’s consciousness and independence.The author then analyses the construction of woman’s images in women’s film in terms of both construction strategies and methods,and finds that the two main construction strategies used in portraying woman’s images are to focus on women themselves and to resist the patriarchal society,while the construction methods are divided into two major aspects:symbolic construction and construction through the use of audiovisual language.Finally,it affirms the value and significance of the woman’s image in Chinese women’s film in the new century.From a cinematic perspective,the woman’s image in women’s film in the new century has enriched the woman’s image on the screen and inspired the shaping of the woman’s image.At the same time,the compromising and confrontational approach to feminist attitudes in these films has been reflected upon,and the author believes that the expression of feminine consciousness should be more thorough,and that the confrontational approach to the construction of the woman’s image should be broken out.It is hoped that the research in this paper will provide some reference for the construction of woman’s images in Chinese film in the future,and promote more realistic and colourful woman’s images on the screen.
