This thesis focuses on different types of women image as well as their deep cultural background in the modern Chinese exoteric novel. Exoteric novel is one of the giant existences, but as the past literature history was only about the 'new literature', exoteric novel wasn't given a space for its own. At the same time, women, who have been treated as the ruled class by men in the traditional ideological Chinese thought, were certainly considered to be speechless for their own needs. Recently, as the speedy development of the free style literature atmosphere, exoteric novel has been given lots of attentions with the literature field , feminism has also had certain development. However, the current Chinese exoteric novel is mainly focusing on the fission or from the whole aspect of the reconstruction of the literature history, considerably has weaken the exploration of the textural creation and the character impersonation, as for unscrambling the women image of the texts has been ignored even worse. Meanwhile, what literature pays attention to women is mainly focusing on the feminism ideology that comes out from the feminist writers. In fact, as the most accurate and promote literature format of reflecting the psychological and reading requirement of the contemporary mass culture, exoteric novel has been playing an very important role of releasing feminism in the literature field. This thesis tries to focus on the impersonation of women characters from different social status, combining with the background of current Chinese literature development as well as the historical rule of exoteric novel, from the whole aspect and the feminism aspect to analyze the Chinese contemporary exoteric novel's development. This thesis has four chapters.The first chapter is about the Chinese prostitute. In the 20th century, as a popular subject, prostitute has been portrayed within numerous exoteric novels. The reasons can be concluded as follows: firstly, the development of urbanization has caused huge amount of residents, at the same time, the influence of the "novelistic revolution" has led the scholar-bureaucrat who used to despise novels, now to be readers.
