Translation Report Of Culture-loaded Words In Chinese Culture Brochure

With an increasing effort in foreign exchange,Chinese culture has gained mounting affection from international friends.In recent years,culture-loaded words have been paid more and more attention in the field of translation.Culture-loaded words,without proper translation,would fail to convey the core meanings and cultural,thus leading to a degraded quality of translation.Therefore,it is important to strike a balance between keeping Chinese characteristics and obtaining recognition and acceptance from the target readers while translating these Chinese culture-loaded words.The translation materials in this paper are selected from traditional culture courses of The China Soong Ching Ling Science and Culture Center(中国宋庆龄科技文化交流中心)(hereinafter referred to as the Center).The“space of Chinese quintessence”(粹空间)plays a vital role in promoting the essence of traditional Chinese culture by launching experiential activities.However,there is a gap in language barriers and an incomplete translation system within these activities.Therefore,the author participated in the project of translating the traditional Chinese culture brochure,attended relevant courses,and took charge of the compilation and translation of the manual.In the original texts,culture-loaded words are frequently used.Hence,dealing with the translation of Chinese culture-loaded words into English is the key to this project.Based on the theory of cultural translation and aimed at accurately conveying the cultural value of traditional Chinese culture-loaded words,this report is divided into five chapters,namely introduction of the translation project,review of cultural translation theory and culture-loaded words,description of the translation process,case analysis,and lastly summary of the translation practice.In order to properly handle the translation of culture-loaded words in the course of traditional Chinese culture,these words are categorized into two groups:completely vacant culture-loaded words and incompletely vacant culture-loaded words.These words are studied in translation cases analysis.As indicated by translation practices,literal translation,transliteration plus interpretation or free translation could be employed for completely vacant culture-loaded words while literal translation plus interpretation or literal translation plus transliteration could be adopted for incompletely vacant culture-loaded words.In general,the reproduction of a Chinese original text in another language is meant for promoting the essence of traditional Chinese culture.Therefore,the cultural imagery in culture-loaded words should be reserved to its utmost,and the subjectivity of the Chinese culture should be projected with diversified translation methods,thus truly promoting the essence of traditional Chinese culture.
