At present, there is not much studies on the translation of literary criticism works.Reading Du Fu: Nine view, written by nine western researchers from Harvard University and other prestigious universities, examines and reflects on Du Fu’s poetry in the context of Home,Empire,Buddhism and other elements, presenting a different perspective, approaching from that of the Chinese academy and making it a rare masterpiece by western scholars. In this regard, the author selects this book for translation practice, explores the translation strategies and skills of literary criticism works under the guidance of George Steiner’s hermeneutics theory, and also hopes to serve the international dissemination of Du Fu’s poetry,so as to tell Chinese stories well. This translation report starts with introduction about the background and significance of the translated text and project, followed by a review of the overall development of hermeneutic theory, focusing on George Steiner’s hermeneutic theory and the research status of literary criticism translation.Works from pre-translation to post translation are briefly introduced in the project process. In the main chapter, the author analyzes the specific cases of translation practice one by one according to the four steps of George Steiner’s hermeneutic theory--Trust,Aggression,Incorporation and Restitution.By discussing many translation skills such as amplification and omission, domestication and foreignization, the author deeply understands and demonstrates how the hermeneutic theory is embodied in the process of translation,as well as the effect and the reference significance. This translation practice finds that George Steiner’s hermeneutics has strong adaptability to literary criticism works, which enjoys strong logic, complex sentence patterns and rigorous academic nature. The four steps can effectively help the translator clarify the ideas, give full play to the translator’s subjectivity, and make more flexible use of various translation theories,so as to achieve better translation. |
