Research On Impact Of Family Economic And Cultural Capital On Children’s Educational Attainment

As an important channel for the country to accumulate human capital and for the flow of various social strata,education is of great significance.The equity of education has drawn extensive attention.It cannot be attained via schooling alone and the influence of family factors on personal growth and educational attainment cannot be ignored.The impact of the family’s cultural and economic capital on the educational attainment of children is experimentally studied using data from the 2018 China Family Panel Studies.Three intermediary variables including family fertility,parents’educational expectations,and children’s educational expectations,are introduced,and an analysis framework with multiple mechanisms is constructed on the basis of the theory of cultural reproduction and intergenerational transmission.According to the study,economic and cultural capital in the family have a very significant positive effect on children’s educational attainment.Simultaneously,the number of births and educational expectations play a mediating function between family capital and children’s educational attainment.In comparison to economic capital,the quantity and quality of cultural capital have a greater impact on the substitution mechanism.Educational expectations play an important role in passing down family advantages to offspring.They act on educational attainment as a chain intermediary mechanism by transforming parents’ educational expectations into their children’s educational expectations.To reduce the impact of family economic capital on educational opportunities while increasing the impact of family cultural capital.First,schools should strengthen their independent construction in order to prevent education from being eroded by external economic capital;Second,parents should continue to learn to improve their own vision and create a good cultural environment in the family to influence their children;Third,parents should actively guide their children and set high educational expectations for them;Fourth,from various perspectives,the government should ensure the investment and improvement of basic educational facilities,among other things,in order to improve the equity of education in our country.
