As a unique form of linguistic expression in Chinese language, hiatus has a rich cultural connotation and humanistic characteristics, and exists in large numbers in our daily life and literature. For a long time, scholars in China have taken the ontology of hiatus as the research object, and have explored the definition, characteristics, classification and application of hiatus, and have harvested a large number of valuable results. At present, scholars in linguistics have used the knowledge of cognitive linguistics to explore the cognition and construction of language. However, the research on cognitive grammar related theories in language cognition in China has not been carried out in a comprehensive manner, and it has rarely been explored in teaching animal hysterics in Chinese as a foreign language. Therefore, this study attempts to use the theoretical knowledge of cognitive grammar to explore the metaphorical mechanism of animal hysterics, and then propose teaching suggestions for animal hysterics to enrich the teaching content of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. This paper is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, which mainly describes the background of this paper, the sources and methods of the research, the research questions, and the significance and purpose of the research, and briefly introduces the basic theories of cognitive grammar. We present the research questions based on a review of the previous literature, the research on the ontology of animal hiatus, the research on the ontology of cognitive grammar and its use,and the research on the exploration of hiatus with cognitive linguistic theory. The basic theories of cognitive linguistics are the main theories applied in this paper, among which the main ideas constituting cognitive grammar, the composition of the collocation relation and the recognition of the concept of autonomy/dependency in cognitive grammar are the main theoretical supports for the metaphor analysis in hysterics in this paper.Chapter 2 is the analysis of animal hysterics corpus data based on the Complete Hysterics and the CCL corpus. We analyze the proportion and usage of animal hysterics in harmonic puns, semantic puns, direct metaphors and allusive metaphors in the collected corpus data. From the analysis of the data,it can be seen that semantic puns and metaphors are the most frequent, while phonetic puns and allusive metaphors are less frequent. However, the frequency of use differs from the percentage. The animal hysterics in the category of allusion and metaphor, which had the lowest number of occurrences, were used most frequently. The third chapter is an analysis of the metaphorical mechanism of animal hysterics.Based on the theoretical basis of cognitive grammar,we use Xu Shenghuan’s autonomy/dependency analysis framework as a guide to describe the metaphorical phenomena embodied in different kinds of animal hysterics based on the similarity and adjacency of metaphors, and explore the cognitive mechanisms of these metaphors to find out the cognitive patterns of different kinds of animal hysterics and understand the cognitive characteristics of different kinds of hysterics.Chapter 4 contains teaching suggestions.Based on the data analysis,task-based teaching method and metaphorical cognitive thinking,we propose effective teaching contents and methods in three aspects of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, teaching methods and teaching thinking, and design a complete task-based teaching case based on the teachers’ full understanding of the cognitive rules of animal hysterics,so as to promote the teaching of animal hysterics in Chinese as a foreign language.Chapter 5 is a summary. The research of this paper is summarized accordingly, and the main findings and shortcomings of this paper are identified.
