A Translation Report On Tunpu Di Opera And Tunpu Ethnic Groups (Chapter 7) From The Perspective Of An Apporoach To Translation As Adaptation And Selection Yang Hongmei

Culture is a historical phenomenon,representing the accumulated social history.Cultural diversity has become a vital issue in the context of globalization,and governments worldwide prioritize the development of their ethnic cultures.The book Tunpu Di Opera and Tunpu Ethnic Groups provides a comprehensive and accessible discussion of Di Opera’s origin,historical background,and its role in the construction of Tunpu society.This translation report,exploring the book’s Chapter 7,aims to allow more foreign friends to gain insight into the unique cultural characteristics of Tunpu,and to promote the inheritance and development of the ethnic culture while guiding cultural tourism.Based on Hu Gengshen’s approach to Translation as Adaptation and Selection(TAS),this report analyses the translation strategies adopted by the target text from the perspective of three-dimensional transformations,including linguistic,cultural,and communicative dimensions.As for the linguistic dimension,the author mainly explores the translation of four-character phrases and run-on sentences.It is found that liberal translation can be adopted in the translation of four-character phrases,while omission,addition,and appropriate sentence segmentation and combination can be applied to the translation of run-on sentences.Regarding the cultural dimension,the author focuses on the translation of culture-loaded words and idioms related to Di Opera,where literal translation,liberal translation,literal translation with annotations,transliteration,and transliteration with annotations are used to adapt to the ecological environment of the source text and prioritize the reproduction of the source text’s meaning rather than its form.In terms of the communicative dimension,the author mainly addresses the cohesion and connotation of the entire text.Since English and Chinese employ different means to achieve textual cohesion and coherence,suitable translation adjustments are needed to reproduce the logical and semantic relationships of the source text and ensure the fluency of the target text.The translation practice validates the applicability of TAS to this text type and provides guidance for translation at the word,sentence,and discourse levels.In addition,case analysis is conducted in the report from the perspective of TAS’s three-dimensional transformations,which achieves an ecological balance from the source text to the target text and convey as much as possible the intended meaning of the source text.This report is expected to serve as a reference for future translations of texts related to Di Opera from Chinese to English.
