| Among the researches of motion events expressions,Talmy’s lexicalization patterns theory focuses on the corresponding relationship between conceptual semantics and language surface.Slobin further developed the theory by proposing to extend the research from morphosyntactic to discourse and narrative style.Based on Talmy’s theory of lexicalization patterns of motion events, this thesis takes the motion events in Yu Hua’s novel Zai Xiyu Zhong Huhan and its translation(Cries in the Drizzle)as the object of study, focuses on the coding forms of the semantics of manner and path in Chinese and English motion events, and explores the similarities and differences of their lexicalization patterns and the tendency characteristics of their linguistic rhetorical styles,so as to provide some references for the translation practice of motion events.Firstly, from the perspective of morphological syntax, after counting the proportion of verbs and satellite components used in Chinese and English to encode path information, this thesis found that both Chinese and English tend to combine path information with satellite components, showing the attributes of satellite-framed language. From the perspective of discourse and rhetorical style, the thesis made a comparative analysis of the expression of the path and manner information in English and Chinese. After comparing the syntactic positions and expressions of path information, the thesis found that English mostly uses a verb followed by several prepositions to express continuous path information, showing the characteristics of a typical satellite-framed language. However,Chinese tends to use multiple verbs to divide motion events into several displacement segments, showing the characteristics of verb-framed language. In addition, after counting the types and numbers of manner verbs in English and Chinese motion events, the thesis found that there are similarities and differences in the expression of manner information between English and Chinese. What they have in common is that both English and Chinese have verbs that can express information of the same basic category. The difference is that the types of English manner verbs are richer and the expressions are more detailed, showing the characteristics of satellite-framed language. When translating motion events with manner information in the original language,English will selectively retain or omit the manner information in the original language according to the context and its own language characteristics. This thesis also compares the coding forms of manner and path information in English and Chinese and explores the differences in rhetorical styles between English and Chinese. The comparison and explorations are of significance for translating motion events expressions between Chinese and English. |
