Abstract/Summary:
Buddhism was introduced into Xinjiang in the early period, which left a wealth of Buddhist archaeological remains, which laid a solid material foundation for the study of Buddhist archaeology in Xinjiang. In order to have a deeper understanding of the spread and influence of Sarira belief in Xinjiang, this paper makes an in-depth analysis of the spread and influence of Sarira belief in Xinjiang based on the archaeological findings of Xinjiang and previous Buddhist archaeological research results in Xinjiang, combined with relevant historical documents, with a view to deepening the study of the evolution history of Buddhism in Xinjiang.First of all, starting from the archaeological findings in Xinjiang, the archaeological findings that can reflect Sarira belief in the Buddhist remains in Xinjiang are sorted out, which mainly includes two types of Sarira belief buildings and Sarira belief objects. The buildings of Sarira belief include two categories:Sarira stupa and Sarira grottoes; The main items of Sarira belief are two types of buried containers and Sarira offerings. These archaeological findings reflect the rich and diverse types of Sarira belief archaeological remains in Xinjiang.Secondly, the in-depth analysis of the time, center area, route and way of the spread of Sarira belief in Xinjiang. From the point of view of the spread time, the Sarira belief in Xinjiang should have spread from around the 3rd century AD to the 14th century AD gradually died out.In terms of the areas of dissemination, the two major centers of Sarira belief in Xinjiang were formed in Kucha and Gaochang. From the perspective of transmission routes,Sarira belief in Xinjiang initially started from Kucha and Khotan, and spread eastward and northwards respectively, thus forming routes of eastward and northwards transmission. From the perspective of transmission methods,Sarira belief spread in Xinjiang through a combination of architecture, images and documents, which all promoted the spread of Sarira belief in Xinjiang.Thirdly,it discusses the evolution of Sarira belief in Xinjiang. From the perspective of evolution time,it can be divided into three periods:Wei to Jin,Sui to Tang and Song to Yuan. From the rise of Sarira belief in Wei to Jin Dynasties to the decline of Sarira belief in Song to Yuan Dynasties, the "bury and support space" of Sarira belief constantly changes, making its building and image patterns also change. As the development of the bury and support system in Xinjiang,it promotes the secularization of Sarira belief in Xinjiang. Finally, the influence of Sarira belief in Xinjiang is discussed. This paper holds that the phenomenon of secularization of Sarira belief appeared in the Tang Dynasty, which has the characteristics of widespread Sarira belief, popularization of offering activities and popularization of spreading methods. The secularization of Sarira belief reflects the secularization and utilitarianism of the purpose of Sarira belief.Under the influence of secularization, the funeral customs and political culture in Xinjiang have changed to some extent, which also strengthens the connection between Xinjiang and the secular society.
