The Study Of Yu Xiuhua’s Poetry

Yu Xihua’s appearance was an "accident" in the contemporary Chinese poetry,when the explosion of Through Half of China to Sleep with You brought her,who come from the lower classes and suffered cerebral palsy,into the public eye.Today,Yu Xihua has become one of the most widely read contemporary Chinese poets.In contrast to the "colloquial poets" of the past,Yu Xihua has taken the rare step of moving her "colloquial poetry" closer to traditional poetry,abandoning the carnivalesque and popularized poetry of the new century.Her poems are rich in imagery,and the same imagery is given multiple symbolic meanings depending on its form and type;she is adept at using oppositional structures to highlight inner contradictions,creating emotional tension through confrontation,and giving her poems infinite vitality.Using the methods of close textual reading,interdisciplinary research and comparative study,this paper interprets,analyses and evaluates the subject matter and artistic value of Yu Xihua’s poetry from three aspects:self-writing,core imagery and creative evaluation.Apart from the introduction and conclusion,the body of the thesis is divided into three chapters:Chapter 1,the Self-writing of Yu Xihua’s Poetry.Yu Xihua’s physical disability has put her in a difficult position of both survival and spirituality,which has made her a very humble person.As a result,she falls into emotional chains in the repeated alternation of "acceptance-struggle".Chapter 2,the Core Imagery of Yu Xihua’s Poetry.Four core images are selected:"countryside","flowers","train" and "moon",and they are used to focus on the symbolic meaning of the imagery and explore the inner feelings of the poet underlying the imagery by using a close reading of the text.Chapter 3,the Evaluation of Yu Xihua’s Poetry.Compared to the work of past "colloquial poets",Yu Xihua’s poetry has evolved and innovated,but it also suffers from repetitive themes,excessive "bitterness" and a lack of refined language.In conclusion,as a "colloquial poet",Yu Xihua has surpassed her predecessors,providing a new direction for the creation of "colloquial poetry" while taking into account the artistic value of her poetry,and serving as an inspiration for the creation of contemporary Chinese poetry.The cramped conditions of her life and the ravages of illness make her poetry repetitive,which in turn undermines the artistic value of it.
