Theodosius I was the founder of the Theodosian dynasty during the Roman Empire. It is generally believed that Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire during his reign. However, there are still a few controversial issues about how Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire. This paper is a tentative study of the Christian policies of Theodosius I in the history of the Christian policies of the Roman Empire in the 4th-century from the perspective of medium-term.This paper is divided into the three parts: The first part gives an overview of the Christianity policies before the Theodosius became the emperor.During this period, the Roman emperors complied with the tendency and took what they need,Christianity in effect became a political instrument that used to preserve political stability. The second part mainly studies the Christian policies of Theodosius I.The emperor shook up Christianity for a stronger position in the eastern part of the Roman Empire. As for his suppression of polytheism,on the one hand, that was conventional for the Roman emperors during this period,on the other hand, the purpose that he did that is to put the entire Roman Empire under the control of his family. The third part mainly discusses the historical status of Theodosius I in the process of the Christianization of the Roman Empire.During his reign, the church was brought to a relative unity in the entire Roman Empire, the interdependence between the emperor and the church more and more deep, and the political position of polytheism in national affairs was turning for the worse. Therefore, when Theodosius I was concerned, the historians of the Christian Church in the 5th-century were more likely to describe a victory of Christianity over polytheism. But overall, during the age of Theodosius, the number of Christians increased rapidly and gradually occupied the vast majority of the population. The establishment of Christianity as the official religion of the Roman Empire is not the result of the laws of Theodosius I.It’s a result of the general reaction to the Roman society from the Roman emperors in the 4th-century.
