The Ming dynasty was a period of rapid development of private book collecting in ancient times, and the emergence of many well-known bibliophiles and various ideas and theories of book collecting during this period has added a great deal of colour to the development of libraries in ancient China. This study adopts the perspectives of book history and reading history, and takes the private book collecting style of the Ming Dynasty as the research object.Based on the basic personal information and historical data of 364 private book collectors of the Ming Dynasty collected by the author, the book collecting activities and book collecting ideas of private book collectors of the Ming Dynasty are explored in depth in two dimensions, namely time and place, mainly by qualitative analysis, supplemented by quantitative analysis,to present a clearer picture of the overall book collecting style of the Ming Dynasty. The main focus is on qualitative analysis, supplemented by quantitative analysis,to present a clearer picture of the overall book collecting style of the Ming dynasty. The present study is based on this dimension and uses a visualization approach to explore the development of private book collecting in the Ming dynasty and to broaden the research horizon. The study first analyses the influence of the political environment, the prosperity and development of crafts and commerce, and the development of scholarship and changing ideas on the formation of private book collecting in the Ming dynasty, and argues that these factors laid a good foundation for the development of private book collecting in the Ming dynasty.Secondly,in the temporal dimension, qualitative and quantitative analyses are combined based on the book collecting activities and ideological performance of collectors at various stages, and the different characteristics they presented in terms of book collecting routes, book content and book correspondence are explored in depth, thus sorting out the evolutionary trends of private book collecting in the Ming dynasty.Again, from a geographical perspective, the Ming collectors are divided into two regions, the north and the south, and the geographical distribution characteristics and spatial and temporal changes of the collectors are presented with the help of GIS.The different collecting styles of the two regions are further examined in terms of the identity characteristics of the collectors, the contents of the collections and the book dealings, reflecting the geographical differences in the collecting styles. Finally,it combines the private book collecting culture of the Ming dynasty with the social landscape of the region, mapping its existence in terms of the cultural needs of the citizens, the trend towards profit-making,and elaborating on the impact it had on culture.
