A Study On The Pulse Of Yangwujiu’s Ink Plum Painting

During the Southern Song Dynasty,Yang Wujiu led the transformation of ink plum painting from an attempt at ink painting to an orthodox literati painting theme.His painting technique gradually became a model of ink plum techniques,which was highly praised by many ink plum painters in later generations.The painting theme of ink plums was originally created by the monk Zhong Ren of the Northern Song Dynasty.Zhong Ren used thick ink to make flowers,and the ink plums in his paintings swayed like the shadows of flowers in the window,which was known as the "ink halo method" at the time.In the Southern Song Dynasty,Yang Wujiu inherited,innovated,and developed his own style of painting plum blossom petals in circles,with empty circles without coloring,"flying white" for branches,and "rat tail" for slightly longer branches.This ink plum painting method is known as the "circle petal method.".During the same period,painters such as Tang Zhengzhong and Xu Yugong also slightly changed the order of their ink plum painting methods.The painting was first painted with ink halo and then painted with plum branches and plum blossoms.The blank parts reserved on the plum branches either represented plum blossoms under moonlight or plum branches under white snow.At that time,people called this method the "inverted halo method".In addition,the art of Yangwuwei’s ink plum painting is presented in a way that integrates poetry,calligraphy,and painting.The plum branches in the painting are written with calligraphy and ease.The inscription and postscript of the plum blossom poetry are interlinked with the artistic conception of the picture.The elegant and clear style has influenced many ink plum painters in later generations,such as Zhao Mengjian and Wang Mian of the Yuan Dynasty,Chen Lu of the Ming Dynasty,Liu Shiru,and Yun Shouping of the Qing Dynasty,who were deeply influenced by Yangwuwei’s ink plum and created many outstanding ink plum works.This article first elaborates on his painting pedigree through the inheritance and inheritance of Yang Wujiu,and discusses that his ink plum painting is a summary of previous painting methods,and on this basis,forms a unique painting style.On this basis,future generations inherit and innovate,and then form the ink plum painting vein.This article uses image analysis and comparative research methods to analyze the layout and style of Yang Wujiu’s plum blossom painting works,starting with their size,theme,and painting techniques.Then,based on the plum blossom poetry and calligraphy inscriptions and postscripts in his plum blossom painting works,it discusses the literati elegance implied in his paintings.By analyzing the painting achievements and artistic style characteristics of Yang Wujiu’s ink plum painting veins,this paper indicates the status of Yang Wujiu’s ink plum painting veins in the history of Chinese painting and even flower and bird painting,as well as the spirit contained therein and its farreaching impact on future generations.
