In horse paintings of past dynasties,there are many images of horses with beautiful shapes,rough and unrestrained shapes,which are deeply loved by rulers.However,in traditional horse paintings,there is also a type of painting style that contradicts social aesthetic trends-the image of thin horses.It is noteworthy that thin horse paintings mainly appeared in two periods: the Yuan Dynasty society ruled by the Mongols and the Qing Dynasty society ruled by the Manchus.As an inseparable part of China’s history,the Yuan and Qing dynasties were the only two "ethnic groups on horseback" regimes that unified the country.In a specific era,painters with different identities conveyed their inner world to the outside world using thin horses as a carrier through secular feelings for horses,forming a unique and continuous artistic image.Therefore,the understanding of the lean horse image in horse paintings cannot simply stop at the observation of visual aesthetics,but should explore the underlying information hidden therein.By studying the works related to the image of thin horses in horse paintings handed down from the Yuan Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty,we can understand the construction foundation and image characteristics of the image of thin horses in the society at that time,and explore the reasons for the appearance of thin horse image paintings under the aesthetic consciousness of the two Shang Ma ethnic groups and their underlying meanings.The construction foundation of the word "thin horse" is the foundation and prerequisite for a deep interpretation of this image.By sorting out the emergence and origin of the word "thin horse",we can explore more possibilities for the thin horse image in the screen.The contrast between the strong horse in the aesthetic consciousness of the ruling classes of the Yuan and Qing dynasties and the thin horse in the literary works is a difference between reality and ideals.The centralized appearance of lean horse images is closely related to social systems,cultural concepts,and other aspects,which has deep historical implications and historical basis.This provides a reference for the painting of lean horse themes in the Yuan and Qing dynasties.The images of thin horses in the paintings of the Yuan and Qing dynasties present different effects in terms of ink language,composition,and other aspects,and there are differences and similarities between the images of thin horses in the two generations.At the same time,the lean horse images of the Yuan and Qing dynasties transcended their own visual aesthetic value,constructed a unique contemporary identity of literati,and became a clue connecting the lean horse images of the Yuan and Qing dynasties and an emotional expression of the painters’ subjective feelings.Through the interpretation of the lean horse images of the two dynasties,the similarities were discovered,which is a symbol with profound expressive meaning and artistic language.In addition,the lean horse images of the two generations contain rich time marks and spiritual implications,which are classic interpretations of an era and society.These meaningful lean horse images have also inspired and influenced future generations in terms of painting style and expression forms.Through the interpretation of the lean horse image in horse paintings of the Yuan and Qing dynasties,this paper studies the essential content of the lean horse image,thereby exploring the spiritual meaning behind the lean horse image and the spiritual connotation of the work.
