Research On Composing Technique Of Tan Dun’s Opera The First Emperor

Tan Dun,as one of the most outstanding contemporary composers,based on traditional Chinese music and supplemented by modern Western composing techniques,has built his beautiful vision of man and nature between localization and internationalization.It plays a positive role in spreading Chinese traditional music and introducing western music culture.As one of Tan Dun’s most important works,The First Emperor of Qin was composed in 1996 and premiered in 2006.It is a large-scale opera with two acts and five performances.The combination of national musical language and modern techniques forms the musical characteristics of the play.This paper studies from the perspective of creative techniques.The first chapter introduces the creation background and story structure of the First Emperor of Qin.The second chapter focuses on the text,combined with the analytical dimension of music art,describes the characters in the play.The third chapter analyzes the musical materials,musical elements and representative classical passages used in the play.The fourth chapter analyzes the instrumental method of the whole play,mainly from the band arrangement,the use of timbre,horizontal and vertical texture of the timbre processing in-depth analysis.Through the research on the creative techniques of Mr.Tan Dun’s opera "The First Emperor",it also brings beneficial enlightenment for the author to combine the elements of folk music with modern composing techniques.
