Chinese traditional culture is a significant source of literary and artistic innovation.Within this rich cultural heritage, the traditional folk legend of "The Legend of the White Snake" endures by virtue of its distinctive female archetype and timeless narrative that embodies humanistic values. In the context of the new scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation, the cultural ecology and development model are undergoing rapid reconstruction.Traditional cultural narratives are being disseminated through new media and technologies, and the communication context of Transmedia Storytelling is being established. It is against this backdrop that two animated films featuring female themes in Chinese folklore," White Snake" and "Green Snake",have emerged. These films creatively transform and innovate upon the traditional story of "The Legend of the White Snake".From the perspective of Transmedia Storytelling, this study focuses on the series of animated films of "White Snake" as its primary research object. It examines the foundation of this film series through the lenses of traditional text, film subject, and audience participation.Additionally, this study delves into the specific framework for constructing female images in the "White Snake" animated film series.Specifically,it investigates the audience’s emotional attitudes towards the female characters depicted in the series and analyzes how the female images within the series influence the audience.Furthermore, this research examines the"reproduction" behavior of the female images of animated films during the audience’s participation. The paper is divided into four main sections. The first section of this paper provides a fundamental analysis of the construction of female images in the"White Snake" animated film series from the perspective of the traditional text.It is found that the source text of the traditional "White Snake" story is the fundamental source for the construction of female images in the "White Snake" animated film series. This chapter mainly explores the basis for constructing female images in the Transmedia Storytelling of the "White Snake" animated film series.Firstly, this paper traces the source text "The Legend of the White Snake" of the animated film series.Secondly, careful analysis is given on the generation of the source text and its female image,as well as the media evolution of the source text and its female image. Finally, this paper analyzes how the "White Snake" animated film series extends the source text and its female image based on the narrative style proposed by Lubomir Dolezier. The second section of this paper provides a text analysis of the construction of female images in the film subject. It reveals that the "White Snake" animated film series has a specific three-layer framework for constructing female images. This chapter primarily utilizes text analysis as a research method to explore how female images are specifically constructed through Transmedia Storytelling based on the main body of the "White Snake" animated film series.Drawing on frame theory, the framework is divided into three levels:high, middle, and low.The theme frame analyzes the different thematic choices of the "White Snake" animated film series, and discusses the three-dimensional female image constructed under multiple themes. The narrative framework is analyzed from two aspects:space and plot.Lastly, the language framework focuses on visual and auditory language. The third section of this paper provides an audience analysis of the construction of female images in the "White Snake" animated film series through comments and interviews. An audience evaluation model of the female image in the "White Snake" animated film series is established, with "theme-narrative-speech" as its core. The analysis reveals that the audience’s emotional response towards the two films is generally positive, and they deeply engage in the construction of female images within the "White Snake" animated film series through comments and "reproduction".This chapter primarily utilizes Grounded Theory and In-Depth Interview to analyze audience comments and interviews. It explores the audience’s evaluation mode and emotional tendencies within Transmedia Storytelling, how the female images in the "White Snake" animated film series have influenced the audience, and how the audience participates in the construction of these female images.Firstly,1,476 comments are coded in three levels using Grounded Theory, and an evaluation model of female images in the "White Snake"animated film series is established. On this basis, the attitude and word frequency of audience comments on the "White Snake" animated film series are analyzed using Python language in emotional analysis. Finally, the research method of In-Depth Interviews is adopted to further explore the influence of the "White Snake" animated film series on the audience and their participation in its construction. The fourth and final section of this paper delves deeper into the main issues surrounding the construction of female images in the "White Snake" animated film series within the context of Transmedia Storytelling, based on the research findings of the previous three sections. The section offers theoretical and practical insights into these issues. The research conclusions are then summarized, and the shortcomings of this study are acknowledged.Additionally, future research prospects for this topic are proposed. |
