Slaughterhouse-Five is Kurt Vonnegut’s masterpiece,which is widely acclaimed for its humorous and ironic styles.Billy’s time travel has always been the center of former research,most of which interpreted it as the symptoms of Billy’s mental illness.In order to approach to the essence of Billy’s time travel,this dissertation analyzes the text of Slaughterhouse-Five in detail on the basis of the dream narrative theory by French theorists Canovas and Gollut,in order to explore the dream narrative in the novel.Firstly,the dissertation introduces Vonnegut and the novel Slaughterhouse-Five;then it introduces the relevant theories and applications of dream narrative;finally,it conducts a thorough and detailed interpretation of the text.This dissertation analyzes the dream narrative texts contained within the novel from the perspectives of time,space,and tension.The unique loose structure,intriguing leaps of time and space,and ubiquitous ironic discourse of Slaughterhouse-Five are all closely related to dream narrative technique.By the dream narrative,the text of the novel is filled with strong tension,which firmly draws readers’ attention to the space of the text,which is the source of the everlasting charm of Slaughterhouse-Five.This dissertation explores further for the anti-war theme and humanistic care of the novel with the help of dream narrative theory to present the unique and important functions of dream in novels.
