According to the 50th Statistical Report on the Development of Internet in China, the number of mobile short video users in China has reached 962 million by June 2022,accounting for more than 90%of the total number of Internet users nationwide. The characteristics of short video such as "fragmentation" and "strong stimulation" make users easily addicted to it,resulting in overuse behavior, and thus causing a series of negative effects.Scholars have great concern about the consequences of overuse of short video.According to the survey, college students have become the main force in the use of short video applications. The college students who frequently browse short videos will perform worse in cognitive tasks, and will show impatience in some tasks that require willpower, unable to concentrate on completing a complex task, and have a slow response to some stimuli.Based on this, many scholars have investigated the overuse of short video, but empirical research on the impact of short video on individual cognitive function is still very scarce.Based on the resource-limited theory, the use satisfaction theory and the arousal theory, this study explored the long-term and short-term effects of short video use on college students’ alert attention through three experiments. In Experiment 1,a total of 49 short video high intensity users and short video low intensity users were recruited through the questionnaire, and the performance of the two groups of subjects on the attention network test(ANT)was compared. In Experiment 1,it was found that the subjects in the short video high intensity and low intensity use groups did not reach significant differences in the three subfunctions of the attention network test.In experiment 2,60 subjects were recruited to use the self-compiled alert attention program, and the visual cues were changed into auditory cues to more accurately measure the inherent alertness and phase alertness of the subjects’ alert attention. The results show that the low intensity users have better inherent vigilance and phase vigilance in alert attention, which verifies the long-term effect. In experiment 3,33 subjects without short video experience were recruited and randomly divided into long video browsing group or short video browsing group. The pre-test and post-test of alert attention were conducted before and after watching the video. The difference between the pre-test and post-test showed the absolute effect of short video use on alert attention. The relative effect of short video use on alert attention was verified by watching the difference between the scores of subjects in the long and short video groups before and after the test. The results of experiment 3 showed that the post-test reaction time of alert attention was higher than the pre-test,but there was no significant difference, that is,the absolute effect was not significant. The difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of individuals in the short video viewing group is higher than that in the long video viewing group, and there is no significant difference, that is,the relative effect is not significant. The absolute effect and the relative effect are not significant, and the short-term effect cannot be verified. This study verifies the existence of the long-term effect of short video use on alert attention, expands the relevant research fields of short video, provides evidence for the impact of short video on individual cognitive function, and can play a warning role for short video users.
