Qiao Yi was a representative poet in the first and middle periods of the Qing dynasty. He was a diligent writer and researcher of poetry throughout his life, and wrote extensively, but his poetic reputation failed to gain prominence due to repeated failures in his examinations.Qiao Yi’s poetic ideas are scattered in three works, namely Jianxi Shi Shuo(The Poetry of Jianxi),Dali Shi Lu(The Poetry of Dali)and Du Shi Yi Fa(The Method of Poetry),and are quite unique. However, the current research on Qiao Yi’s poetic creation, poetic discourse and poetic criticism has not formed a certain scale, which is not equal to Qiao Yi’s proper position in the history of Qing dynasty poetics and Qing dynasty poetic criticism.Through a close reading of his poems, poetic discourses and anthologies, this article aims to reveal the overall outlook of Qiao Yi’s poetic style and to gain a more comprehensive understanding of his poetic conceptions and poetic creation practices. The first chapter comprehensively summarizes Qiao Yi’s poetic style view, mainly analyzing from the outside to the inside from two parts:the development and evolution of poetry and the characteristics of poetic style. It is believed that Qiao Yi can view poetic style from the overall development and evolution of poetry, focusing on tracing the origin and evolution of poetry from different eras, and discussing the tracing of various poetic styles from their origins, development, and evolution to the rules of poetic evolution,in order to avoid falling into the narrow concept of Zong Tang or Zong Song,Providing a valuable perspective for the debate over Tang and Song poetry in the Qing Dynasty, demonstrating the value of Qiao Yi’s poetic theory. The second chapter takes poetry as the core and starts with a detailed analysis of Qiao Yi’s critical practice. The specific criticism practices are the comprehensive poetry discourse work "Jianxi Shuo Shi",the monograph on Du Fu’s "Du Shi Yi Fa",and the poetry anthology and commentary on "Da Li Shi Lue".Firstly, the external forms are sorted out,and then the basic theoretical viewpoints of poetic criticism works are summarized. It is believed that Qiao Yi can not only comprehensively review poetry from previous dynasties, but also focus on the most outstanding poet Du Fu,as well as pay attention to the neglected group of Dali poets at that time, possessing the excellent qualities and vision of a poetic theorist. The third chapter turns to Qiao Yi’s poetry creation practice, comprehensively analyzing and summarizing his choice of poetry style, specific content and style,to explore his poetry creation tendency from the perspective of poetry style.Qiao Yi’s creation of ancient poetry prefers the Five Classics, advocates elegance and integrity, and takes Han and Wei ancient poetry as a model of ancient poetry.Qiao Yi’s modern style poetry mainly focuses on the five and seven rhythms, with a style similar to that of Wang Meng and others in the prosperous Tang Dynasty. His creation and poetic perspective complement each other.
