Abstract/Summary:
Li Shizhens The Compendium of Materia Medica is a comprehensive medical monograph that explains the names and uses of nearly 2,000 drugs,and contains a wealth of material for linguistic research,including phonetic history and exegesis.The current status of the study of The Compendium of Materia Medica is that most of the research has been focused on medicinal science,nomenclature,and exegesis,while the study of its phonetic annotations is almost at a blank stage.The number of phonetic annotations in the Materia Medica is considerable,with a total of 1,369 entries after exhaustive collection and elimination of complexities.This paper examines the phonetic annotations of The Compendium of Materia Medica,aiming at sorting out its phonetic system,which can enrich the study of phonetic history,show the pattern of phonetic evolution,and provide empirical evidence for phonetic evolution beyond the phonetic character books.The text is divided into six parts,which are described as follows:The introductory section briefly introduces the life of Li Shizhen and the introduction and edition of The Compendium of Materia Medica,summarizes the current state of research and its significance,and explains the research methodology.The first chapter is an overview of the phonetic annotations of The Compendium of Materia Medica.This section examines the sources of the phonetic annotations,analyzes the methods and terminology used,and summarizes the characteristics of the phonetic annotations on the basis of a comprehensive collection of the phonetic materials of The Compendium of Materia Medica.The second chapter is a study of the phonetic sounds of The Compendium of Materia Medica.In this part,the phonetic system of the phonetic notes of the Materia Medica is summarized and the reasons for the phonetic evolution are analyzed,based on the collected phonetic notes and the phonetic consonants of the phonetic characters.The third chapter is a study of the phonetic categories of the phonetic notes of The Compendium of Materia Medica.Through the analysis of the rhyme classes of the phonetic characters and the phonetic characters in the collected phonetic materials,the rhyme system of the phonetic notes of The Compendium of Materia Medica is summarized,and the reasons for the phonetic evolution are analyzed.The fourth chapter is a study of the tones of the phonetic notes of The Compendium of Materia Medica.The fourth chapter is a study of the tones of the phonetic notes of the Materia Medica,in which the main features and evolutionary trends of the tones are summarized by classifying the tones of the phonetic characters and the phonetic characters in the collected phonetic notes in the order of Ping,Shang,Go,and In.The concluding section summarizes the vowel,rhyme,and tone systems of The Compendium of Materia Medica and their evolutionary patterns,and reveals that the author,Li Shizhen,used the Ming dynasty pronunciation as the main focus of his annotations,but also mixed his own dialects.This is a clear manifestation of the special nature of The Compendium of Materia Medica as a work of medicine.
