A Practice Report On C-E Translation Of Shandong Travel Guide(Excerpts)

This thesis is a Chinese to English translation report on Shandong Travel Guide jointly published by Shandong Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism and China Cartographic Publishing House.The source text excerpted for translation practice contains about 11000 Chinese characters,and currently there is no translation available.Over recent years,many domestic scholars have committed to the study of tourism translation and achievements in Shandong province tourism translation have already been made by some domestic scholars.Yet,the existing translation of tourism publicity materials gives more priorities to those relatively famous cities in Shandong province,such as Qingdao,Yantai,and Weihai city.The translation of their publicity materials in some small and medium-sized cities with profound cultural deposits,has not been carried out in a comprehensive way,and the relevant corpus is insufficient and outdated.This report assigns more importance to the translation and analysis of tourism text in some small and medium-sized cities in Shandong Tourism Guide.Through the analysis of the translation practice,the author concludes that translation skills such as annotation,and transliteration plus literal translation can be adopted to translate proper nouns.And the fourcharacter structures can be translated into “adjective and noun” and “subject and predicate” by using different translation skills in light of their specific grammatical relation.For non-subject sentences and long sentences,translation skills such as adding subjects and division can be employed respectively.This report is presented in the hope that it could contribute to the English translation of the tourism publicity materials and provide certain practical guidance for junior translators engaged in tourism translation.It can also serve as a reference to the translation of similar kind and help timely update the previously published relevant tourism publicity materials,so that overseas tourists can grasp the cultural conventions of Shandong Province.From this translation practice,the author of this report has gained more tourism knowledge,cultural features,and deposits of Shandong Province,apart from the translation skills of scenic spot names,four-character structures and long sentences in tourism text,which will be conducive to future translation work.
