As an important part of Chinese traditional culture, traditional Chinese medicine, with its unique theories and excellent curative effects,is attracting more and more foreigners and playing a pivotal role in the foreign exchange of Chinese culture. As an emerging discipline,English translation of TCM gives a strong boost to the foreign exchange of TCM.The material for this translation practice is selected from the book Desire and Depression Cause Diseases edited by Professor Liu Daxin of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. The author chooses chapter five and chapter six for translation. The two chapters mainly talk about the relationship between depression and diseases, and believe that depression and diseases affect each other. That is to say, depression can cause diseases which in turn lead to depression.Guided by Newmark’s Semantic and Communicative Translation theories, the author analyzes the selected materials with the help of Textual Analysis Theory.Firstly,as a medical text,Desire and Depression Cause Diseases is a branch of scientific and technical texts which are grouped into informative texts,so the book can be categorized as an informative text.Secondly, there is another point that should not be ignored: one of the characteristics of the language of TCM is its literary nature. The book has many references to ancient texts, which has a strong classical color,so it can be classified as an expressive text. This report is divided into five chapters. The first chapter introduces the background, the purpose and the significance of the report. The second chapter introduces the content and the stylistic characteristics of the source text. The third chapter is the description of translation process including three aspects: preparation for translation, translation process and proofreading for translation. The fourth chapter is case analysis, which analyzes and discusses the methods and techniques of translating TCM texts under the guidance of Semantic Translation and Communicative Translation. This chapter mainly analyzes from lexical and syntactic level, which is the key part of this report. The fifth chapter is the conclusion, which summarizes the gains and shortcomings of this translation practice.
