| The translation practice report is based on the translation program that the author is responsible for.The source text is selected from the memoir Lady in Waiting:My Extraordinary Life in the Shadow of the Crown written by Anne Glenconner,a British aristocracy.The translation of the source text gives Chinese readers access to knowing Anne’s life.The translation can provide reference for readers interested in the life of British Royal Family.Meanwhile,it can also offer some help to the translation of biographical texts.The translation practice report is guided by the cultural translation theory put forward by Susan Bassnett.By means of translation strategies including cultural transplant,cultural compensation and cultural adaptation,the report did concrete case analysis on the translation of cultural elements,aiming to solve the problems of cultural elements translation.Based on the classification of Eugene A.Nida on cultures,the translator introduces four kinds of cultural elements in the source text.They are material cultural elements,ecological cultural elements,social cultural elements and linguistic cultural elements respectively.As to the translation of material cultural elements,the author adopts the translation methods including paraphrase,literal translation with annotation and transliteration with amplification by cultural transplant.It aims to help supplement cultural information absent in target language countries.It can also help target readers comprehend the source text and eliminate cultural misunderstandings,realizing cultural communication.For the translation of ecological cultural elements,by the translation strategy of cultural transplant,the translation methods including amplification and literal translation with extension are adopted to enrich the target culture and promote cultural exchange by retaining the original cultural elements.With regards to the translation of social cultural elements,the author adopts the translation methods including substitution,literal translation with extension and literal translation with amplification.It aims to convey the connotative meaning in the cultural elements and eliminate cultural conflict brought by different cultures so that cultural functional equivalence can be achieved.As for the translation of linguistic cultural elements,under the guidance of cultural adaptation,the translation methods including extension,substitution with addition and paraphrase with variation are employed.The use of these methods is conducive to resolving cultural conflict and making the target text corresponding with the reading habits of Chinese readers.By means of the translation of an excellent foreign biography,the report aims to explore the methods of translating cultural elements in the source text.Different translation methods should be chosen flexibly according to the translation purposes and the characteristics of different translation objects.All of the translation methods serve for the realization of cultural functional equivalence and the transmission of characteristic culture behind the source text. |
