A Report On The C-E Translation Of Cultural Elements In The Chinese Articles On Cultural Websites

Under the consideration of the development of China and demands of the age,the author chooses the Chinese articles on the cultural column of China.com.cn and Chinaculture.org as translation practice materials.The Chinese cultural elements in the articles are selected as research object of this report to summarize the translation methods and rules after classification.Chinese culture features huge and complicated system with wide coverage.From Bassnett's cultural translation view,the author believes that the basic unit of Chinese cultural translation is embodied in the translation of Chinese cultural elements.The author carries out the first-level classification according to the existence of cultural elements in English and Chinese languages,and the second-level classification according to the commonness and individuality of cultural elements' connotation and denotation in English and Chinese;further,the author discusses the use of domestication or foreignization strategy in the light of the semantic of cultural elements,and the application of specific translation methods such as transliteration,adaption and transposition under the guidance of the corresponding translation strategies in the C-E translation of cultural elements.For some Chinese unique cultural elements which are completely absent in English culture,the author chooses to transliterate them with annotation under the guidance of foreignization strategy;while for the unique cultural elements which can be found similar ones in English,then the adaptation translation method is used under the guidance of domestication strategy to realize language functional equivalence and the purpose of cultural exchange.For the English and Chinese shared cultural elements,some of which have the same connotation but different denotations are handled with transposition under the guidance of domestication strategy;meanwhile the others have the same denotation but different connotations need to adopt transposition in line with the objective reality.It is hoped that the classification of Chinese cultural elements and the corresponding translation methods on this report will provide some new ideas for following Chinese to English cultural translation and enhance the influence of Chinese culture.
