The Boy on the Bridge,a novel written by British writer M.R.Carey,is a post-apocalyptic thriller with tense and thought-provoking plots.Nowadays the post-apocalyptic fiction is a relatively popular genre of English novels.It tells a story about how people fought against Hungreis(zombie)which appeared after a severe plague.In the process of struggling with Hungries,selfless dedication and self sacrifice in human nature burst out frequently,so that readers can better understand the significance of the existence of human species on the earth through the understanding of these valuable advantages of human nature.Under the guidance of Communicative Translation Theory by Peter Newmark,this report,based on the translation of chapter 1 to 8 of The Boy on the Bridge,thoroughly analyzes of the process and outcome of the translation.The theory of communicative translation lays stress on the functions of a text and the subjective initiative of the translator,which make sure the translated story easy to understand and accessible for target readers.During the translation process,how to translate expressions with cultural defaults attracted the translator’s attention.The expressions of cultural default,especially the default of religious culture of the western world,usually have no counterparts in Chinese.To solve the problem,the annotation is utilized to reveal the hidden background information to readers.In this way,the implicit background information hidden behind the text is exposed to the readers explicitly and clearly.The Boy on the Bridge,the source text studied in this paper,is foreign thriller literature.It focuses on the readership,so it requires the translation to be easy to understand and accessible for target language readers.In the perspective of communicative translation theory,this translation practice report analyzes the application of communicative translation theory on the basis of fully understanding the source text and uses substitution technically to deal with the information and expressions in a diversified and multi-level way.The report’s purpose is to reasonably modify the source text to turn it into a form acceptable to the target language so that the influence of language differences can be avoided and the translation will be as idiomatic,fluent and easily understandable as the original text.
