Virginia Woolf is an influential modernist woman writer in the 20th century. She is good at tracking people’s psychological activities with the writing technique of stream of consciousness so as to break the tradition of linear narrative in novels. At the same time, she pays attention to the metaphorical function of space images, which makes the text show the characteristics of spatial narrative. In her later work Orlando,Woolf depicts the space with different characteristics. The real and imagined space contains the interweaving relationship between social space and gender.Orlando’s legendary life subverts gender dualism, while Woolf’s grasp of spatial meaning breaks through the binary opposition between time and space, showing the openness and inclusiveness of the "third space".This thesis takes Edward Soja’s third space theory as the breakthrough point and feminism as the research perspective, and makes a text close reading of Orlando from three narrative dimensions of the third space. At the same time,it explores the narrative features of the "third space" in the text, and studies the inclusiveness of Woolf’s view of women’s writing from two aspects:breaking the tradition of biographical narrative and experimenting with three-dimensional spatial narrative.By interpreting the construction mode of Woolf’s spatial narrative, this thesis probes into the representative meanings in different spaces and their interaction, thus revealing the significance of space of criticizing patriarchy and deconstructing the binary opposition between the two sexes, and exploring the way and value of the construction of the "third space".
