A Report On The Translation Of The Dialogues In McGahern’s Love Of The World Under The Guidance Of Context Theory

John McGahern is renowned as a leading and highly influential Irish writer.His works have gained a reputation for their fascinating insights into rural life in Ireland.He is not only skilled in creating long novels but also experienced in producing short stories.The source text Love of the World for this translation practice is a short story from his Creatures of the Earth:New and Selected Stories.This short story tells a tragic marriage and concentrates on the small area of rural Ireland,which explores the themes of marriage,life and human nature.This story contains a lot of dialogues which run through the whole story and exert considerable influence on pushing up the development of plot,revealing the background and enriching the image of characters.Therefore this report is to discuss the translation of dialogues in this story.As a transferring activity between two languages and two cultures,translation cannot be separated from context.Thus this report is mainly conducted under the guidance of context theory.According to context theory,the dialogues can be analyzed from both the intra-linguistic context and extra-linguistic context.The influence of intra-linguistic context on dialogue translation is explored on three levels:lexical level,sentence level and textual level,while that of extra-linguistic context is explored from three aspects of situational context,social context and cultural context.In order to achieve a better translation,the translator should take into account both the original context and the target context.This translation practice not only deepens the translator’s understanding of context theory,but also improves the translator’s translation level.Through this translation practice,it is obvious that context theory can be applied to translate dialogues in literary works and its application can make the target text more comprehensible.Therefore,the translator confirms that context theory has a strong practical value in translation practice.
