| John McGahern is one of the most famous contemporary Irish novelists,whose works are mainly about Irish country life and family life.Amongst Women depicts a self-enclosed and autocratic father image.Moran,the novel’s protagonist,is dissatisfied with the Irish social environment after the Irish War of Independence.He isolates himself from the outside world and establishes an "ideal republic" in family which he can totally control.The translation of any type of literary works(especially the novel translation)should be faithful to the original text,and more importantly,the translated work should render the target reader an experience and emotion close to that of the original reader.So,attention should be paid to the differences between source language and target language and between the two cultures.These requirements might be satisfactorily met by adopting Communicative Translation Theory,because this theory well combines the advantages of adaption,free translation and idiomatic translation,and emphasizes that the target language readers should have the same experience with the source language readers.Consequently,communicative translation theory is adopted to guide this translation practice,in particular,the translation at lexical and syntactical levels.This translation report consists of four chapters.Chapter one is an introduction to the novelist John McGahern,the significance of the translation practice,the striking characteristics of Amongst Women and the main viewpoints of communicative translation theory.Chapter two is a review of the translation process,including the pre-translation preparations,translating,the proofreading and the difficulties encountered in the process of translation.Chapter three is thecase study which,with typical examples,discusses how some expressions and sentences are dealt with under the guidance of communicative translation theory.Chapter four is the conclusion,mainly including major findings,experience and limitations during the translation. |
