On E-C Translation Strategies Of Passive Voice In EST Based On Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory

In recent years,international exchanges in science and technology have become increasingly frequent.Consequently,English for science and technology(EST)has received widespread attention.To ensure its objectivity,passives are widely used in EST.Hence,how to translate the passive voice in EST smoothly has attracted growing interest.The purpose of this paper is to discuss the Chinese translation of passive voice in EST from the perspective of Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory and to summarize practical strategies,taking the translation text of MCWP 3-01 Offensive and Defensive Tactics(Chapter 4-5)as an example.Through the analysis,the author concluded that Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory is applicable to the translation of passive voice in EST for its systematicness,scientificity,clearness and practicability.It is hoped that the paper can provide useful guidance and reference for the translation of passive voice in EST,as well as for the construction of China’s national defense.
