A Report On The E-C Translation Of Baggage:Confessions Of A Globe-trotting Hypochondriac(Excerpts) Guided By The Translator’s Subjectivity

In the 1990s,with the “cultural turn” of translation studies,translation studies experienced the transformation of “language-culture-human”.The translator’s subjectivity became an emerging topic in translation research.The current research on translator’s subjectivity focuses more on the analysis and orientation of theories,accompanied by certain translation case analysis.However,there is still a lack of close combination with micro translation skills.The combination of translator’s subjectivity theory and case translation practice plays a guiding role in deepening the study of translator’s subjectivity and related translation practice.Guided by the theory of translator’s subjectivity,this E-C practice report summarizes the difficulties during translation by analyzing typical cases from the five levels of aesthetic interest,cultural consciousness,ideology,reader acceptance and aesthetic expectation,and discusses the translation methods and skills used.The original text is strongly literary,and the large number of cultural factors involved in the literary work make the prose translation a great challenge.The translator adopts the direct translation under the foreignization translation strategy to retain the lexical and rhetorical meanings of the ST.At the same time,several translation methods under the domestication translation strategy,including paraphrase,idiomatic translation and variation translation are employed.In terms of translation techniques,addition,omission and rhetorical shift are taken to accurately convey the message of the ST and achieve effective communication between Chinese and foreign cultures.The major findings of this study are summarized as follows after the translation practice: Translators should fully reproduce the beauty,form and spirit of the ST so that the SL and TL readers can enjoy the same effect;translators should take into consideration factors such as ideology and aesthetics in the translation process,and delete,add or annotate the original text;the premise of giving full play to the translator’s subjectivity is to abide by “faithfulness”,neither should absolute fidelity be pursued to the detriment of the target reader’s reception,resulting in a text that is difficult to understand,nor should the translator’s traces be omnipresent in the original work,obliterating its style.This report,guided by the theory of translator’s subjectivity,analyses and summarizes the specific methods applicable to the translation of travelogue prose texts.It is hoped that this report can serve as a reference for the translation of similar types of texts.
