A Report On C-E Translation Of Science And Technical Text From The Perspective Of Rhetorical Structure Theory

China’s growing economic strength has promoted innovation and progress in its transportation modes.Among them,China’s high-speed railway,with obvious advantages,has greatly enhanced intercity connections and national economic development.With the advancing pace of the “Belt and Road” Initiative,the implementation of "Going Global" of China’s high-speed railway has become an important measure in publicizing and exporting China’s scientific and technological achievements.At the same time,the successful operation and management of high-speed railway technology in a country cannot be achieved without the training and cultivation of relevant talents.In the construction of high-speed railway,personnel building is a crucial link.The original text of this translation report is selected from chapter 8 of A Research on the “Going Global” Strategy of China’s High-speed Railway Under the “Belt and Road” Initiative.The text comprehensively introduces the training and strategic deployment of high-end talents of high-speed railway technology.While in translating the source text,it can be perceived that there are many long and complicated sentences and many paragraphs with multiple layers of logical relations.For the resolution of problems and difficulties met in the process of translating these sentences and paragraphs,the Rhetorical Structure Theory has been found and proved to be adoptable,and thus the author chooses this theory as the guiding theory for translation practice to explore the rhetorical relations,textual logic and corresponding translation methods of long and complicated sentences and paragraphs with multiple layers of logical relations in scientific and technical texts.The author tries to understand the structures of the source text,establish rhetorical structure model and seek for corresponding translation methods by segmenting the source text into units,analyzing and defining the relations between different spans,and drawing hierarchical schemas.As far as the practical study of C-E translation is concerned,the thesis comes to the following conclusions:(i)For the translation of long and complicated sentences and paragraphs with multiple layers of logical relations in texts,translators can make use of Rhetoric Structure Theory to clarify the cohesion and coherence between various spans in sentences in a more intuitive,structural and hierarchical way.(ii)In science and technical texts,the relations of Joint,Interpretation,Evaluation,Background,Evidence and Circumstance are frequently used among all rhetorical relations.(iii)In the application of Rhetoric Structure Theory in the field of translation practice,the thesis verifies three translation methods,including division method,supplementary method and restructuring method.Although the thesis only discusses the rhetorical structure of one specific type of text,it can provide some reference for the usefulness of the Rhetoric Structure Theory in the field of C-E translation,discourse analysis and translation learning.
