Translation Report On Training Program For International Graduate Students Of Huazhong Agricultural University (Excerpt) Under Communicative Translation Theory

With the further development of economic globalization and China’s national strength,the communication between China and foreign countries tends to be more frequent than ever in history.In recent years,the number of foreign students seeking further education in China has been rapidly increasing,and it is extremely urgent and important for Chinese universities and colleges to formulate and translate foreign student training programs.The author writes this report based on the Chinese-English translation of three chapters in the Training Program for International Graduate Students of Huazhong Agricultural University.According to Newmark’s three text types,the original text should be mainly informative and aimed at delivering information about foreign student education to the readers.The source text contains a large number of terms,elliptical and long and complex sentences,with its language being rather normative and objective.In order to smoothly and effectively convey the information of the Training Program to the overseas graduate students and the foreign faculty members of Huazhong Agricultural University,the translator decides to employ Communicative Translation Theory to guide the translation practice and adopt appropriate translation methods and techniques to resolve the translation problems,so as to produce a decent translation which will be accurate,concise,fluent,natural as well as understood and accepted by the target readers.Guided by Communicative Translation Theory,the translator successfully addressed the translation problems at the lexical,syntactical and textual level by applying proper and effective translation methods and techniques such as reduction,addition,voice conversion,division,reorganization,addition of cohesive devices and rearrangement of textual structure.In this report,based on abundant translation cases,the author will expound the application of these methods to the translation of terms,near-synonyms,category nouns,elliptical and long and complex sentences,in the hope of providing some reference and inspiration for the translation and research on such texts in the future.
