| Effective teacher feedback creates intrinsic motivation and interests and serves as an important source of comprehensible input for English learners. However, inappropriate teacher feedback will impede the classroom interaction and discourage students from active participation in the classroom activities. Therefore,it is necessary for teachers to use appropriate feedback strategies in order to ensure students’ learning achievements in class.Through referring to relevant literature and materials,it is found that there are many mature researches about teacher feedback and students’ participation. But researches on the influence of teacher feedback on students’ class participation are relatively fewer. This paper takes this as an entry point to carry out the research. There are two research questions:(1)what is the correlation between teachers’ positive feedback and students’ classroom participation?(2)what is the correlation between teachers’ negative feedback and students’ classroom participation?Starting from the two dimensions of positive feedback and negative feedback,of the high-school English teacher feedback and the three dimensions of students’ participation in classroom, behavior participation, cognitive participation and emotional participation, this research used the High school English Teacher Feedback Questionnaire and Students’ classroom participation Questionnaire to conduct a questionnaire survey on 268 students and 5 English teachers in X high school in Xi’an,Shaanxi province.Besides, the classroom observation was carried out in the investigated classes and 30 observed English classes were selected as the classroom observation analysis object.Meanwhile, five English teachers and ten students from these classes were interviewed. This study found that both positive and negative feedback from teachers are positively correlated with students’ class participation in high school English classes.Among them, the correlation between teachers’ positive feedback and students’ classroom participation is more significant. The limitations of this thesis are mainly reflected in two aspects.Firstly, the size of sample is relatively small.Secondly, the time for conducting research is limited. |
