A Study Of English Translation Of Xi Jinping:The Governance Of China (Volume Ⅲ) Form The Perspective Of Coherence

Based on Halliday’s cohesion and coherence in systemic functional grammar,this thesis makes a comparative study between Chinese and English texts of Xi Jinping Tan Zhiguolizheng.Firstly,it compares and explores the expression and distribution characteristics of structural(parallel structure and thematic progression pattern)and non-structural cohesive devices(reference,substitution,ellipsis,lexical cohesion and conjunction)in Chinese and English texts.This thesis uses a quantitative research method to collect statistics on the distribution of personal references in Chinese and English texts.Then it analyzes the contextual factors affecting coherence in Chinese and English texts from two aspects: context of situation and context of culture.Finally,it analyzes the translation skills adopted by the translator to reconstruct the coherence of the target text.The conclusions of this thesis are as follows: Firstly,in Chinese and English discourses,the functions of cohesive devices are basically similar,but the frequency of use is quite different.Ellipsis and lexical repetition are often used in Chinese discourses,while reference and ellipsis are used more frequently in English.Secondly,the differences of conjunction in Chinese and English discourses are mainly manifested in that most of them are implicit in Chinese and explicit in English.Parallel structure is basically retained in the process of Chinese-English translation.For the thematic progression pattern,the translator sometimes changes flexibly to better adapt to the expression habits of the translation.Thirdly,the field,tenor and mode in TT are basically consistent with the ST,achieving the coherence of context of situation.Context of culture has a great impact on Chinese-English translation.Translators need to try their best to bridge the cultural gap between Chinese and English to ensure the coherence of the translation.Fourthly,in the process of Chinese-English translation,the translator mainly realizes the coherence reconstruction of the target text by flexibly dealing with cohesive devices and sentence reorganization.
