Economic news is playing a bigger and bigger role in the context of rapid development of market economy, and people’s attention to economic news is also gradually heating up.There have been many studies of economic news over the decades, but they have mainly focused on the economic and management fields. The studies of economic news from the perspective of linguistics are limited, and even fewer studies published in authoritative journals. In this study, the author found that there have been some scholars study business texts from the perspective of narrative theory in recent years, but they are still in their infancy. Therefore, this paper aims to conduct a narrative analysis of economic news on China in The New York Times from the perspective of narrative. This thesis takes January 20,2021 to October 15,2021 as the time period, selects 25 economic news reports on China from the official website of The New York Times as the research corpus, uses Genette’s narrative theory as the theoretical framework, and adopts both qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze the economic news reports on China in The New York Times to find out the narrative features. The findings show that: in terms of narrative time,The New York Times’ economic news reports on China tend to use anachronies in terms of order, with prolepses being used more frequently than analepses; The New York Times’ economic news reports on China use summary extensively in terms of duration, and with scenes being used the least;in terms of narrative mood, the collected sample mainly used narratized speech, followed by transposed speech, with the least use of the most mimetic speech;in terms of narrative focalization,The New York Times’ economic news reports on China widely use external focalization, followed by internal focalization, with the least use of zero-focalization narrative;in terms of narrative voice, the news is widely narrated by heterodiegetic narrator. In addition, this study discusses the possible reasons for the above narrative features. This study attempts to enrich the research perspective of narrative theory through a narrative analysis of economic news reports on China,to contribute to future research on economic news reports, and to offer some references for the writing and teaching of news reports.
