Happy Dreams, the English version of Gaoxing,is the most popular novel of the author Jia Pingwa in the English world. The translator Nicky Harman plays a significant role in this translation event. But not so much concentration is given to Harman and her translator behavior. And translator behavior is inevitably influenced by social factors in the process of selecting, producing and promoting translation works. Therefore,on the basis of Bourdieu‘s reflexive sociology, this thesis studies Harman‘s capitals, habitus and translator behavior, then investigates her reconstruction of the illusio of the original novel. The research findings exhibit that Harman‘s translator behavior contributes to the success of Happy Dreams.Firstly,Harman selected the novel Gaoxing to translate, bringing it to the English world and she promoted the translation version Happy Dreams, contributing to its popularization in the target culture.Secondly,Harman‘s capitals endow her with excellent linguistic competence and great freedom to choose her own translation philosophy.Thirdly,Harman‘s translator habitus divides into initial and professional habitus and the former is further typed as habitus of translating in British and habitus of discriminating protagonist‘s identity. She construes her habitus of translating in British to revise the British slangs into American ones and utilizes her habitus of discriminating protagonist‘s identity to adjust Happy‘s image.Harman also formed her professional habitus in her translation practice, which acts on her translation strategy of combining domestication and foreignization and her translation philosophy of ―translation is the art of compromise‖.At last, the stance of Harman‘s translator behaviors is to reconstruct the illusio of the original. And by analyzing target readers‘ reviews,it is proved that Harman manages to reconstruct the illusio in the target culture, which contributes to the wide acceptability of Happy Dreams.
