| The book Correspondences and Contrasts in Foreign Language Pedagogy and Translation Studies is a collection of academic papers, which is an informative text. The major focuses of this book are correspondences and contrasts between English and Polish and their roles in foreign language pedagogy and translation studies. This report translates the Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 of the book and takes them as the study object of this report.Chapter 1 focuses on the use of English as a lingua franca in international education programmes in Europe, demonstrating the new capabilities of English as an international language(English as a lingua franca).Chapter 2 proposes a metaphor-based language model and demonstrates that the use-based view of metaphorical language has important implications for both cognitive theory of metaphor and teacher education. This translation practice adopts Gutt’s relevance translation theory, aiming to explore the guiding role of relevance translation theory in academic papers translation, and strive to faithfully and accurately reflect the information of the source text so that the translated text meets the expectations of the target language readers,so as to establish the best connection among the source text, the translated text and the readers.Relevance translation theory is to understand and explain the causal and inferential relationships that take place in translation and communicative activities. Its purpose is to explain the phenomenon of translation centered on human cognitive and communicative competence. In order to achieve the optimal relevance between the source text and translated text as well as to reflect the author’s true intention, this report will analyze and summarize the difficulties and problems in the translation practice from lexical, sentence and discourse levels. At the lexical level, methods such as free translation, addition, omission, and conversion of words are mainly used for translating difficult-to-understand words and nominal structures that often appear in academic papers. At the sentence level, the translation of long and difficult sentences mainly adopts the method of splitting of long sentences. At the discourse level, the style of written language as well as the narrative style and argumentative style contained in these papers are analyzed separately to ensure the faithfulness and fluency of the translated text.Under the guidance of the relevance translation theory,it is hoped that the results of this translation practice will provide a certain degree of reference for domestic foreign languages teaching and related research in the future, and attract domestic translators to pay attention to the translation of academic papers, thereby promoting the dissemination of foreign academic innovations in China. |
