Academic translation, that is,the translation on academic works in general,is an important channel for exchanging ideas and spreading cultures in certain fields between the East and the West.Since the 1980 s,with massive works introduced,China has seen great momentum in the development of academic translation.Nevertheless, relevant problems have become apparent in the course, imposing a negative impact on Chinese academia and its integration into the world.Under the situation, the report is written in a bid to trigger more concerns and discussions of translators and scholars to jointly promote the sound progress of academic translation in China. The original text of this report is from Chapter 2 of Cyberpragmatics:Internet-Mediated Communication in Context,a monograph on pragmatics.Due to the characteristics of academic translation and differences between the source language and the target language, translators may face a number of challenges.Based on Relevance Theory(RT)and aiming at achieving optimal relevance, the report analyzes several cases and provides corresponding advice on three levels. On the lexical level,it focuses on the discussion of terminology and abbreviations. On the syntactic level, four translation methods: word conversion, word order adjustment, long sentence segmentation, and conversion of the passive voice, are suggested to process complex and long sentences. On the discourse level, two aspects – reference clarity and structural symmetry are analyzed to help target text(TT)readers to better understand the intentions of the source text(ST).To cope with such a demanding task, translators are supposed to possess adequate professional skills through a combination of consistent practice and theoretical studies.Besides, the more significant aspect is to strengthen the comprehensive personal qualities,an earnest attitude and a high sense of responsibility,as well as enough cultural literacy and knowledge reserve in particular.
