A Report On The E-C Translation Of Guide To English Literature In International And Regional Studies(Excerpts)

This is a research report on the translation practice of Guide to English Literature in International and Regional Studies.In view of the necessity of educating international and regional students,this book,one of the “National Defense Language Series”,was chosen as the source text of the translation.This book is an academic text that consists in politics,history,culture,diplomacy,economy and other topics of important countries and regions with meticulous logic as well as rich connotation.Given that the translation of academic texts emphasizes that the context affects the connotation and extension of the text,thus the context determines the methods of translation,which is in line with the spirit of skopos theory in which skopos determine the means of translation,skopos theory was consequently chosen as the guiding theory for this E-C translation.This study analyzed the applicability of the three principles of skopos theory to the source text,and demonstrated the suitability of the theory to guide the translation of similar academic texts.On this basis,guided by skopos theory and in view of the problems and difficulties in translating the source text,this report adopted a case analysis method to explain the translation skills adopted from lexical,syntactical and textual perspectives.Specifically,at lexical level,conventional rules,transliteration,conversion and word meaning extension are the major translation methods adopted;from the perspective of sentence,linear translation,inversion,change of the voice,division and repetition are applied in translating the source text;and from the perspective of discourse,amplification and reduction are the main methods to improve the logic links,conjunction and coherence in the translation.Under the guidance of skopos theory,specific translation skills and methods adopted for different issues in the source text have been summarized,expecting to provide reference value for the selection of translation strategies for similar academic texts.
