Abstract/Summary:
On how to use children’s literature as graded reading materials,the assay took some paragraphs selected randomly from the series of Naughty Boy Ma Xiaotiao to present the process and tools of textual difficulty analysis,practicability of targeted readers and corpus processing.What we presented in analysis on textual difficulty was process,approach and tools.In the preliminary step,we placed mean length of utterance and difficulty of words as important indices.Words needed to be distinguished in Chinese automatic segmentation online system and be graded according to Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education.For no-level words,it was useful to estimate the grades of the characters and explicitness of association between morpheme and meaning.Then came the cloze test for targeted Chinese learners,whose results should be analyzed by one-sample t test,to determine the difficulty of the paragraphs finally.What we presented in the survey of reader’s acceptation was tools,content of the questionnaire and result of statistics analysis.The survey,covering reading needs of targeted Chinese learners and their empathy of the children’s literary text,could be raised on Wenjuanxing,a useful platform for online investigation.And the correlative analysis on the test data helped recommend the children’s literature to the targeted learners.It was reflected that Naughty Boy Ma Xiaotiao meet the requirement well relatively,including attractive stories,various expressions and recourses abundance.Their good empathy on the text and interest on continuing reading showed no correlation with their cultural background.In additions,with the aim of helping learners to know more about words and Chinese customs as well as practice reading skills,some preliminary designs were shown in the assay.According to the result of difficulty analysis,theory of reading process,the input hypothesis and hypothesis of skill acquisition,the design presented how to use the series of Naughty Boy Ma Xiaotiao in graded reading.The details covered the points such as providing word list,exercise and background knowledge to the readers.As the online system for word grading like Ponddy Reader has not made the new standard in discourse analysis,we created a program matched with new standard on Python.It is arranged to classify different levels of words automatically and effectively,which may benefit international Chinese teaching.
