Yu Pingbo was not only the founder of the New Red Studies, but also a famous poet, essayist, and scholar of the May Fourth period, whose literary achievements were not inferior to his academic research. This paper seizes the evolution of Yu Pingbo’s literary thought of the common people, and through a comprehensive study of Yu Pingbo’s literary theoretical criticism and literary creation,it conducts a chronological and socio-historical study of Yu Pingbo’s written creation in order to clarify the evolution of Yu Pingbo’s literary thought of the common people and to make a more detailed analysis and interpretation of the deeper reasons behind the evolution. When Yu Pingbo first entered the literary world,it was during the May Fourth literary revolution, and literature was seen as an important tool for transforming and enlightening the minds of the people, with the ultimate goal of shaping people with modernity.Under the influence of the trend of "populism" and the populist ideas of his teacher Zhou Zuoren as well as Tolstoy’s Theory of Art,Yu Pingbo’s idea of populist literature "came into being".The Reductionist Theory of the Evolution of Poetry can be regarded as the grand masterpiece of Yu Pingbo’s early thinking on civilian literature. The essay provides answers to questions about the content, purpose and nature of literature for the common people.Yu Pingbo’s advocacy of plebeian literature has attracted strong attention from the academic community and triggered a series of discussions on plebeian literature-the discussion of popular literature, etc.Yu Pingbo had his own deeper and more specific thoughts and answers on how to realize the popularization of literature and the specific ways to realize it,and thus deepened and concretized the idea of popular literature. The interaction with the "popular literature" view of many pioneers of the literary revolution also led Yu Pingbo to slowly change his early views on popular literature. The change began to appear in 1922 in his Correction to the Discussion of Popular Literature, and although his thinking about popular literature no longer coincided exactly with that interpreted in The Reductionism of the Evolution of Poetry,he still adhered to his early thoughts on popular literature. The obvious change in Yu Pingbo’s conception of civilian literature can be easily seen in his Miscellaneous Essays on Literature and Art.Yu Pingbo no longer considers touching people for goodness as the primary criterion of literature, but returns to the literature of life, focusing on the fun and artistry of literature and the personality of writers.Recognizing the bias of his civilian literary thought,Yu Pingbo eventually returned to maintaining the purity and individuality of literature, which was naturally related to the change of times and his own learning and experience. The superficiality of the Plebeian ideology predicted the transience of the Plebeian ideology. In addition, the shift from the center of social thought to the center of politics, the cultural movement giving way to the political movement, the split of the new cultural camp and other factors led to the sharp decline of the populist trend, the influence of the literary thought of related writers and the deep maturity and self-awareness of his own literary thinking, all contributed to the evolution of Yu Pingbo’s populist literary thought. The exploration of the evolution of Yu Pingbo’s civilian literary thought deepens the study of populism in literature, enriches the relevant contents of the study of Yu Pingbo’s literary creation in the May Fourth period, and has certain significance for the contemporary literature.
