Study On Yu Pingbo's Literary Theory

Yu Pingbo inherited profound family culture and was baptized by the May fourth new culture movement.Under this condition,he made great achievements in literare creation and academic research.His literary theory reflected the Chinese literature's transition characteristics when it transforming from traditional to modern at the alternate time of old and new.By the holistic refining and researching on Yu Pingbo's literary theory,this paper not only can give Yu Pingbo an objective position on the history of literature theory,but also can comprehend the relationship between change and inheritance in the development of literature.This paper focuses on three issues to research Yu Pingbo's literary theory : Yu Pingbo's literary view of life,literary aesthetic views and academic research methods.Yu Pingbo's literary theory was formed in these background that strong family culture edification,systematic modern school education and literaty revolution initiated by the western learning.The special living environment and personal disposition made literature a major component of Yu Pingbo's life.Therefore,Yu Pingbo always adhered to the literary standard and made literary view of life become his literary theory's core idea.Yu Pingbo firmly believed that literature was a part of life,so he opposed to use literature as a tool.Because the individual cannot be divorced from the society,so literature inevitably has sociality.Based on this,Yu Pingbo advocated the literature about social life should take good as a guide.Meanwhile,individuals also have independence,so literature cannot abandon poetic quality.Because of this,Yu Pingbo emphasized that literature should be based on interest in individual life.There are many facets of life and literature,so for good and interest are not in conflict.Yu Pingbo kept a permanent relationship with Buddhism.Affected by Buddhism's non-attachment concept,Yu Pingbo was neither too familiar nor too distant when he was treating things.This kind of life attitude influenced his literary aesthetic views.He considered that when the writer was creating a literary work,he should keep a non-attachment mentality.The characteristics that between the obvious and the hidden made the aesthetic feeling of literature.The Xing in classical literature is a typicalexample.Thus,it provided Yu Pingbo's pursuit on the beauty of literary implication.Under this literary theory's guidance,Yu Pingbo made a new interpretation on some traditional aesthetic categories,such as Ming,Qing,Hou,Yuan.Because Yu Pingbo was expert in literary creation and literary theory,so his academic research was rational and perceptual.He provided paradigmatic research methods for academic circle to research The Dream of Red Mansion,classical poetry and free verse written in vernacular.He set the Neo-Redology with Hu Shi and GuJiegang,and he turned the Redology to the normal literature research from Hu Shi's history research by the method that combining scientific research and aesthetic contemplation.On the aspect of researching classical poetry,he used the method of step by step analysis and intuitive comprehension to interpret and appreciate them.And he found a new road for the free verse written in vernacular.He overcame the old concept but not mechanically applying western.He established the legitimacy of free verse written in vernacular by absorbing resources from tradition,indicated the direction for it by analyzing current social psychology,and corrected its mistakes that was crudely made by emphasizing the aesthetic.With the above analysis,we can recognize that Yu Pingbo's literary theory attempted to find a dynamic balance for Chinese literature in the period of social fission by absorbing the old and new.His literary theory is of great of historical and realistic significance for Chinese literature to achieve a smooth transition between the new and the old.Furtherly,it is also a reference for the current literary theory construction.
