The Interactive Mechanism Of School Happiness, Illness, Academic Performance And Learning Engagement: A Cross- Lagged Stud | | Posted on:2023-03-13 | Degree:Master | Type:Thesis | | Country:China | Candidate:X X Cui | Full Text:PDF | | GTID:2555306833958739 | Subject:Applied psychology | | Abstract/Summary: | PDF Full Text Request | | The most recent findings shown in the Blue Book of Mental Health(2019-2020)indicate that the current exam-oriented educational mode pays greater attention to academic achievement,despite the physical and mental health of students to a certain extent being rather ignored,which brought about a series of cognitive,emotional,and learning problems.This problem is specifically identifiable among teenagers,due to their investigation into the great amount of time and energy in high school study.It is inevitable that there is determining an interaction between their physical and mental development with their school life.Therefore,a large body of research looked into the factors that affect academic achievement in school life under the background of examination-oriented education.In general,previous studies had concluded that academic achievement has consistently been regarded as an important outcome of student engagement.School-related well-being would affect students’ concentration and engagement in learning.Meanwhile,a healthy body was also proved to be an important factor.Building upon previous studies,this research proposes that improving students’ current school-related well-being and health could increase student engagement and academic achievement in the future.Therefore,this research intends to explore the linkage relationship and causation among school-related well-being,illness,student engagement and academic achievement.Cross-lag research is used to explore the interaction mechanism and the direction changes concerning time of the overall physical and mental state among high school students when they focus on the learning of specific subjects.This study used tracking research methods to construct a cross-lag model at three time points.To explore the two-way and continuous nature of the impact in school-related well-being and illness on academic achievement and student engagement in specific disciplines(Math;English).This study used the school-related well-being scale,the illness scale,the student engagement scale,and academic achievement.The data were collected by continuous tracking of the participants at an interval of 18 months during 2019-2020,respectively at the end of the second semester of second year in high school(T1: Time point 1),the end of the first semester of final year in high school((T2;Time point 2),and the end of the second semester of final year in high school(T3: Time point 3).Finally,841 participants completed the three data assessments.The main conclusions drawn from the analysis are as follows: there were differences in the mechanism of the overall physical and mental state of students on student academic achievement and student engagement in different disciplines.The predictive effect on the psychological level was much higher than the predictive effect on the physiological level.Specifically,students’ school-related well-being had bidirectionally positive prediction on academic achievement and student engagement.In addition,students’ Math engagement positively predicted Math achievement,and continuously negatively predicted illness.Students’ English achievement positively predicted English engagement,and continuously negatively predicted illness.The results showed that the improvement of individual school-related well-being and health will appropriately increase the degree of student engagement and further improve students’ academic achievement.In the time dimension,students’ current physical and mental state and learning state could promote the overall physical and mental state and learning state in the future.From this,it can be seen that improving students’ current school-related well-being and health can achieve the purpose of increasing student engagement and improving academic achievement in the future.The results of this study suggest that we should focus on motivating high school students’ goals and abilities to pursue health and school-related well-being,with particular emphasis on mental health at school.In order to promote students dedicate themselves to learning,achieve the purpose of learning with happiness and make progress with good health,resulting in a steady improvement of efficiency in learning. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | school-related well-being, illness, academic achievement, student engagement, cross-lag model | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
