As a representative writer of the "Strong wave of realism," Liu Xinglong cried out for the reality with positive spirit. He focused on rural areas under social changes and the poor souls living in the cramped space, showing the survival and mental state of officials in the grassroots regime.Officials,as an important part of Liu Xinglong’s novels, have not received enough attention.Based on this observation, this paper takes the official image as the research object, systematically classifying them, analyzing their construction strategies, and exploring their value and limitations in Liu Xinglong’s novels. The introduction part first introduces the background of the topic, the purpose and significance of the research. Then,it analyzes the present research status of Liu Xinglong’s novels at home and abroad, and defines the concept of officials. Finally,it summarizes the research content. The first chapter, based on the text, systematically classifies the official images in Liu Xinglong’s novels, which can be divided into three categories. The first category refers to the cattle-like officials who are willing to be humble. They either devote themselves to political ideals,or become poor because of their resistance to officialbased culture. The second type refers to the greedy and heartless rat-like officials. They are extremely greedy, addicted to the desire for power, money and sex,and use force to suppress the public both materially and spiritually. The third kind of officials are the ambivalent officials, who vacillate between morality and immorality,or oscillate between the rule of law and the rule of man.The second chapter analyzes the construction strategies of official images in Liu Xinglong’s novels from the perspective of narratology.Liu Xinglong constructs official images through flexible narrative perspectives, such as "official" from the perspective of God and "official" from the perspective of restriction. He selects various plant and animal images to show the living state and image characteristics of officials.Besides,he strengthens the official images through repeated narration, and constructs official images through unreliable narration. The third chapter analyzes the value and limitation of official images in Liu Xinglong’s novels. From the realistic point of view,Liu Xinglong reveals the living state of grass-roots officials. The portrayal of officials makes people look at the real humanity and desire. From the aesthetic point of view, his novels criticize the ugliness and show the beauty. However, the stereotypical fate of female officials and the imbalance in the proportion of official images are also obvious. The conclusion is an overall summary of the official images in Liu Xinglong’s novels. |
